Ridley Scott Talks Alien Prequel

Fresh from dusting off the bracken and pulling out rogue arrows from Robin Hood, Ridley Scott is turning his attention to the two-part Alien prequel.

The project has been germinating since that xeno-baby first popped jauntily out of John Hurt's chest back in 1979 and with Lost co-creator Damon Lindoff close to turning in a script and casting announcements presumably not too far off, Scott's vision for the Alien origin story(s) is coming together nicely.

"The film will be really tough, really nasty," he tells The Independent of the 3D two-parter. "It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"

Hmm... intriguing, if suitably vague, stuff. The notion that the death-dealing xenomorphs are as much an instrument of a higher power as, say, the colonial marines has been part of the Alien mythology for years and seems a logical direction to take the prequels.

No mention of space jockeys yet but some friendly banter for his successor on the franchise. "Jim's raised the bar and I've got to jump to it," he says. "He's not going to get away with it." Mr Cameron, consider yourself warned

Blockbuster Plans to File for Bankruptcy

I truly, sincerely apologize for this, but: Talk about late fees! Blockbuster has told Hollywood movie studios that they plan on filing for Chapter 11 next month with the hopes of restructuring a “crippling debt load of nearly $1 billion” and escaping the leases on at least 500 of their 3,425 stores.

'Mission Impossible 4' Won't Be a Mission Impossible Film?

Variety insiders claim that the next film won't be called Mission: Impossible IV. In fact, there's a good chance that the M:I moniker won't be visible at all, much like The Dark Knight. Paramount wants to redo the franchise, "hold down upfront costs," and consider how Tom Cruise's box office appeal figures in. Beyond the name change, they're going to put away the old Ethan Hunt + team of agents and have it be an action-packed Cruise-Renner duo, where Renner can take the spotlight in sequels while Cruise has a lesser role.

If Cruise's image woes happened during production of the film, the changes would make sense, but adding a co-star and plopping a hat on the title doesn't make this an all-new, super-flick. In fact, one's got to wonder why Cruise is involved at all, since the studio seems to be intent on a passing of the torch. To get Cruise to even sign on, Paramount and Tom had to put the past in the past, when there was a nasty parting of ways after M:I 3. Why go to this trouble, and box office risk?

And just how much more of the Mission: Impossible framework will be discarded? Will the iconic music get tossed as well? At this point, it seems quite possible that we'll see an action movie with no ties to the original story. And if that's the case, they might as well have just tossed off Cruise and used the same general idea with Renner taking the reigns immediately.

Is Paramount headed in the right direction, or are they doing it all wrong?

Idris Elba Is New Alex Cross In Relaunched James Patterson Film Franchise

Idris Elba has signed to play Dr. Alex Cross in Cross, a new installment of James Patterson's bestselling murder mystery series that will be directed by David Twohy. Kerry Williamson wrote the script. Elba takes over the role originated by Morgan Freeman, who played the sleuth in the Paramount Pictures thrillers, 1997's Kiss the Girls and 2001's Along Came A Spider. Twohy is doing a rewrite.

In the novel, Cross tracks a serial rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife years before. The film is being produced by Lloyd Levin, Belle Avery and Leopoldo Gout, along with the author and Steve Bowen.

Production will begin in 2011, likely in the spring. The film will be privately financed and distribution is being set. Paramount is a possibility.

There are few franchises out there with a black actor in the lead role. So this is a big star-making step for the British actor who emerged from the HBO series The Wire and into films like RocknRolla, American Gangster, Obsessed and The Losers. He just wrapped the role of Heimdall in Marvel's Thor, and next stars in the Screen Gems heist film Takers, which opens August 27.

Elba has also kept his hand in TV. After a memorable arc in NBC's The Office last season, he played the title role in the British detective miniseries drama Luther, and will next be seen in an arc of episodes playing Laura Linney's love interest in the new Showtime series The C Word. Elba is repped by ICM, The Schiff Company and UK-based Ken McReddie Associates.

Director Matthew Vaughn Edits X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Script After Seeing INCEPTION

While working on X-Men: First Class in London recently, director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) took a little time to check out Christopher Nolan’s Inception. So, how was the screening, Mr. Vaughn? Per the Los Angeles Times:

“I saw ‘Inception,’ which I loved,” Vaughn said Monday. “But my heart sank when I saw that a few of the ideas we had were up [on the screen]. So it’s either leave it in and look as if you’re copying or change things. We completely ripped out about 12 pages of the (First Class) script and the storyboards.”

Vaughn says that the removed sequence revolved around “dream-space combat,” and featured Professor X (James McAvoy) and other mutants fighting amidst spinning rooms and “other physics-bending imagery.” While I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing visuals similar to Inception’s within X-Men: First Class, I can respect Vaughn for wanting to do his own thing. Also, although the sequence in question will likely never see the light of day, I have to admit that I like where Vaughn’s head is at in terms of the visual style of First Class.

Revisions aside, X-Men First Class is scheduled to hit theaters June 3rd, 2011 and currently stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Alice Eve, and Kevin Bacon.

Road To Perdition Sequel coming soon?

Sam Mendes‘ Road to Perdition failed to live up to box office expectations, but is notable for a few reasons: It was Mendes’ sophomore follow-up to the critically-acclaimed breakout hit American Beauty, babyface star Tom Hanks was playing a “bad guy,” and it was one of the first comic book adaptations which strayed as far you you can from the capes and superpower realm. The film was not a huge financial success, although the movie is still regarded by some as “a beautiful and criminally underappreciated film.”

Ever since it’s release we;ve been hearing rumbling of a possible sequel. In November 2008, it was reported that Max Allan Collins, the man behind the original series of Road to Perdition comics, has been hired to write two sequels to Perdition, called Road to Purgatory and Road to Paradise, for JBM Productions

According to the report, Road to Purgatory would follow the character of Michael Sullivan, Jr., the son of Tom Hanks’ character in the original film, “who returns from World War II with a new determination to avenge his murdered father.”

Cloverfield 2 a possibility??

The possibility of a Cloverfield sequel has had genre fans foaming at the mouth since the day the original crashed into theaters. While promoting Let Me In at Comic-Con, Matt Reeves let a few choice words slip about Cloverfield 2.

"Cloverfield 2 is on hold for now," says Reeves. "J.J. [Abrams] is very involved with Super 8 and I've been doing Let Me In, so we have shelved it until we can get the team from the first back together."

So all is not lost on the Cloverfield front. Just don't expect it any time soon.....

Polanski Free After Swiss Refuse Extradition

Roman Polanski is a free man - officials in Switzerland have thrown out a request to extradite him to the U.S. for sentencing on a child-sex charge.

The Pianist director has been under house arrest at a luxury chalet in Gstaad since he was seized in Zurich last September en route to a film festival.

U.S. authorities demanded the film-maker be returned to the States to face sentencing for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. He pleaded guilty to the offence but fled to Europe in 1978 before facing a court.

But Swiss officials announced on Monday that the extradition has now been turned down - because they cannot rule out the possibility that there is a "fault" in the request.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry says, "The reason for the decision lies in the fact that it was not possible to exclude with the necessary certainty a fault in the U.S. extraditionary (sic) request."

Polanski is expected to return to his family home in France.

Men In Black III

Men In Black III has been a long time coming, but we can finally expect it to crash land on our screens on 25 May, 2012. Now, JoBlo have gathered together a time capsule of information about the alien threequel, which reveals plot details, potential celebrity alien cameos, and the nature of the new villain.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Wolf Of Wall Street

DiCaprio has been attached to the film for some time, with his favourite director previously Martin Scorsese attached to direct it. But when production on the adaptation stalled, the duo went off and made Shutter Island instead. Now it seems it’s Ridley Scott to the rescue, as he’s in talks to jump into the directing chair.

Wolf Of Wall Street, adapted from the script of Jordan Belfort’s 2008 memoirs, follows ill-fated genius (Jordan Belfort) who in the ‘90s became one of the most famous American financiers.

A stock-chopper with connections to the mob, he made a thousand dollars every minute, and lived a life stuffed with drugs and sex. Colourful events include a binge that ended up sinking a massive motor yacht, the crashing of a Gulfstream jet, and a $700,000 hotel bill.

In other words, just the kind of role you’d expect DiCaprio to be interested in.

New James Bond Film Gets Canceled

All development on the next James Bond film has been canceled as MGM continues to deal with its financial problems.

This news shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone who has been following MGM’s ongoing troubles. In April, we learned that production on the film was delayed indefinitely.

Still, just because we all saw it coming doesn’t make it sting any less. With Sam Mendes signed on to direct and a story from the mind of screenwriter Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), the latest Bond film was shaping up to be one of the franchise’s best. After the kind of disappointing Quantum of Solace, I was very excited to see how Daniel Craig would fare in his third outing as 007.

Decision on new Spider-Man very soon

I'm not too sure how this new Spider-Man will be. Obviously Sony/Columbia Pictures have faith in it. They’ve finally drawn up a list of potential Spideys according to the Deadline.

1. Logan Lerman star of Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief
2. Aaron Johnson Star of Kick Ass
3. Anton Yelchin
4. Andrew Garfield
5. Jamie Bell
6. Alden Ehrenreich

Whoever they choose to become the new Spider Man has some big shoes to fill. the Director of 500 Days of Summer has been hired to bring this re-webbing to cinemas by summer 2012 and in 3D. The script has been typed up by Jamie Vanderbilt with shooting set to commence later in the year.

So who’ll play the webbed wonder? It’ll be very interesting to say the least. It seems like Jamie Bell is the front runner but my bet is on Logan Lerman...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play The Riddler?

I think it would be great for Gordon Levitt to play The Riddler in the UNTITLED BATMAN 3 movie. Another person I can see playing the Riddler is Sam Rockwell. Who do you think would be a good fit?

Peter Jackson to direct the Hobbit?

Already credited as the producer, it seems Jackson could be willing to direct.

It's the news all fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, that he's in talks to direct the two planned Hobbit movies, following the departure of Guillermo del Toro.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jackson is in negotiations with studio Warner Bros and its subsidiary New Line to fast-track the two movies into production. The aim is to bring them into cinemas in 2012 and 2013. He has not yet agreed to take the job, however.

Del Toro left the project last month after its predicted production period stretched from an initial three years to at least six, though he had a major part in penning the screenplay. Jackson had previously been listed as a producer.

Toy Story 3 Review

It's hard to believe that it's been 15 years that Disney and Pixar Animation Studios released its first "Toy Story." With its third and final installment, Woody and Buzz, along with the rest of the gang are all back and have come full-circle in "Toy Story 3."

Synopsis

Andy, owner of Woody and the gang, is all grown-up and heading off to college. Because he is all grown-up, playing with his toys has not been on his main agenda, and the gang has been subjected to an old toy chest. Along with other toys that remain, Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Ham (John Ratzenberger), and Slinky (Blake Clark, replacing the late Jim Varney) and Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Andy packs up his things to go to college and has to decided with toys are to be donated, put in the attic, thrown-out, and which are coming with him.

Woody is chosen to go to college, while the rest of the gang is chosen for the attic. After being mistakenly "thrown-out," the gang found their way into the donation box headed for Sunnyside Daycare with Woody on hand to try to convince the gang that Andy did not throw them away.

Feeling rejected by Andy, Buzz and Jessie lead the rest of the toys to their new lives at Sunnyside Daycare. Initially, the daycare, led by headed by Lotso the stuffed bear (Ned Beatty) and a Ken doll (Michael Keaton) looks like a great place where the gang will be loved and played with again, but in true "Toy Story" fashion, things turn bad quickly.

Woody escapes from Sunnyside, but runs into toys that have previously lived in the daycare and are now owned by a little girl. Once Woody hears of the "real" Sunnyside, the race is on for Woody to save his friends, and get them back safely to Andy's house before he leaves for college and realizes that he and the gang are missing.

The Bottom Line

For a rated-G movie, it can be quite dark and somber and feels as though the movie is a bit long. It is a real tear-jerker for new fans and especially the old fans that have been with the franchise for all these years.

However, the animation is crisp and clean and the colors are vibrant and eye-popping. I suggest seeing this movie in 3D. Overall, "Toy Story 3" is a movie is a great tale about family, the power of friendship, loyalty and about maturity and letting go. It is a feel-good story that is heartfelt and manages to combine a charming children's story with a mature theme that captivates audiences of all ages. Disney and Pixar add another great movie to their belt and did a great job in providing closure to the "Toy Story" 15 year trilogy.

Inception Early Review

Inception Early Review: Rolling Stone Goes FirstPeter Travers gives a 3 1/2 star review of Christopher Nolan’s Inception in Rolling Stone. The review is not online yet. But The New York Post’s Lou Lumenick found a hard copy on a New York newstand, and posted the bullet graph:

“The mind-blowing movie event of the summer arrives just in time to hold back the flow of Hollywood sputum that’s been sliming the multiplex. ‘Inception’...will be called many things, starting with James Bond Meets ‘The Matrix.’ You can feel the vibe of Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’ in it, and Nolan’s own ‘Memento’ and ‘The Dark Knight.’ But ‘Inception’ glows with a blue-flame intensity all its own. Nolan creates a dream world that he wants us to fill with our own secrets. I can’t think of a better goal for any filmmaker. Of course, trusting the intelligence of the audience can cost Nolan at the box office. We’re so used to being treated like idiots. How to cope with a grand-scale epic, shot in six countries at a reported cost of $160 million, that turns your head around six ways from Sunday? Dive in and drive yourself crazy, that’s how.’‘
